The producer behind some of my favourite songs, probably some of yours too. He's produced for Common, The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest among others. He was a part of Slum Village, The Ummah and The Soulquarians. Notable songs include "The Light" by Common and "Got 'til It's Gone" by Janet Jackson featuring Q-tip. Heck, he even cemented my love for donuts as something more than just a tasty treat.
The story of his later life plays out like a tragic movie. Poor health, touring from a wheelchair, mounting hospital bills. But he didn't let that get in the way of his music. On the 7th of February 2006, J Dilla's 32nd birthday, he released the aforementioned instrumental album Donuts. Three days later he was gone.
It was later revealed that he had been suffering from lupus, an autoimmune disease with no cure. Paying for Dilla's medical bills left the Yancey family deep in debt and in response the global hip-hop community set up many events and projects to help set them straight. The Ts from Well Dressed Vandals is Sydney's freshest effort, with all proceeds donated to the Yancey family.
Now I wasn't as deeply into hip-hop in 2006 as I am now and I hadn't been listening to J Dilla's music at the time of his death, but I damn well still feel the loss. As cliche as it sounds, his beats taught me to 'listen to the music, man' and introduced me to a world of head-nodding and velvet basslines and infectious samples. But enough from me, let's let his music talk the talk.
Fall In Love - Slum Village
Can't Stop This - The Roots
Nothing Like This - J Dilla
Holy shit it was hard to pick just three of his songs. Hope they did him justice.
Also I wasn't kidding, somebody buy me a shirt, I gotta save up for schoolies :(
