The Roundup 2010

Well here it is the last day of 2010, and what a fucking year it has been. The World Cup, the HSC, the world's obsession with 3D, the birth of HGH, disasterous mines, North Korea are the ones that just come to my head. But let's look past that to what else this year had to offer.

The Music
I was excited with the prospects that 2010 brought to the electro, dubstep and hip-hop scenes with albums set to be released by Muscles, Bag Raiders, Miami HorrorGrumCrookers (electro) Rusko, Borgore, Skream (dubstep) and Spit Syndicate, Sage Francis, Shad, The Roots and the always elusive Chico and the Man (the collabo of Tonedeff and Kno set to drop in '08) (hip-hop). For the most part all the albums lived up to their expectations.

Without further let me countdown the music that mattered to me in 2010.

Songs To Raise Your Dead Spirits

Sabzi (producer half of Blue Scholars) and a friend of his named Kelsey got together to form a little side project duo under the alias, Made In Heights. Some ethereal beats by Sabzi and beatiful vocals from Kelsey make this perfect winter EP; in the meantime our Australian summer will happily accept this Christmas present for later use.

(p.s. Words from Sabzi himself "Geo and I are happy to announce that Cinemetropolis is fully mixed and on its way to mastering." Get geed!)

Season's Greetings

"Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, except for the count..."

Merry Christmas Everyone, X-Mas mix to drop sometime tomorrow

Merry Christmas Eve!

New Blu & Exile collabo, absolutely stoked for a new album. Below The Heavens was an instant classic, if I may say so.

Also recently, Horrorshow covered a few Aussie classics in their concerts including Ben Lee's "Cigarettes Will Kill You". Here's a free download to their studio recording featuring the lovely Jane Tyrell.

Seriously though, Miss Tyrell, if you ever come across this, I'd just like to let you know that I'd never be a cigarette to you (L)_(L).

Walking On Sunshine.

Nevermind the rainy weather today, it's time to feel good!

My go-to celebration song this year.

HSC results came out today and I'm absolutely stoked. Over the fucking moon. On cloud 9. Cloud 92.15, to be precise. Hurrrrrrrrrrr.

Massive props to FSHS class of 2010 for bringing the motherfucker home. Though we've been beaten down in the past several years, had our backs to the wall with a ne'er ending onslaught of  foes coming our way, we kept our heads high and brought the mighty Fort back  to 13th place in the state. The state . The only comparison that comes to mind, really, is the battle at Helm's Deep when Gandalf The White returns to fuck everyone up.

Summertime and the living is easy

Post HSC. Leaving for schoolies at Byron in a few hours. Summer is upon us. LIFE IS SWEET.
Anyway I basically spent all of monday and tuesday in my room trying to meld together a feel-good summer mix with some of my favourite summer anthems. Most of the tracks in the mix are pretty poppy/synthy so if you don't like that kind of music then this mix is probably not for you. Also a big thanks to my brother whom I've stolen a lot of these tracks from (and probably half my itunes library) over the years. Enjoy the first of hopefully a number of summer mixes.

If there is a peace, I continue the serious speech...

Alrighty, so it's been a while since I finished writing my Major Work short story and I thought it was about time I shared it with this here small audience of my blog. Suprisingly, apart from a few painful sections of dialogue, I was actually pretty happy with it. But don't let that stop you from being brutally honest with me; constructive criticism is still appreciated, as I would like to continue writing and making little projects here and there. Well enough pre-game babble, let's get into it-

Opposable Thumbs by Joseph Bautista

Pretty much the same version as I submitted to BOS, typos and all. The only things I added were my name and a bit of a self-satirising intro to go with the coversheet. Hope y'all enjoy it more than my markers have, and if you do read it please tell me what you think in the comments!

16 November 2010

Another reflection.

In mourning of Jun Seba's death celebration of his life, the official tribute album has been released.Taking a slight flip on the Modal Soul Classics namesake, the tracks here seem to primarily be by those Nujabes himself influenced, rather than songs and artists that influenced he. Amongst these tracks are covers and personalised tributes, including Five Deez remixing Latitude; one of my favourite beats by Nujabes. A highlight definitely has to be the Reflection Eternal cover by Clammbon - a Japanese group cited as one of Jun's influences in the first Modal Soul Classics (Folklore/Imaginary Folklore) returning to pay back their own respect. Not to mention the eye opener intro track by Pase Rock. Shivers down the spine, man.

Was never sliced bread or the wheel reinvented
Just a couple kids with some dreams tryna kick it

10 November 2010

See You Later HSC

Well HSC is over for everyone now so we can all rejoice, kickback and knock back a few cold ones. Plenty of mixes to drop and plenty more good times to be had.

Amen to that

02 November 2010

Holy shit.

Man, QN5 is killing it. If the QK10 Plan ends up anywhere near fruition, this year will be absolutely ball-shattering. Anyway, I'm not even halfway through this album but I just knew I had to blog it. Completely overshadowed the new Cee-Lo leak I found out about today (Death Is Silent still in heavy rotation, though).

Oh yeah and I wont be uploading it since I heard the label's going through a rough patch. And you better believe once I get a job I'll be getting that Paleo-Pack. Here's a free download they released already, though.

The Count Goes Dubstep

The effect I was going for

I finished 5/6 of my exams last week FUCKING BRUTAL but thats over now so i have 2 weeks to chill until my next one. Also be sure to check out DJ X.McAllister's tmblr for some great dubstep mixes at http://xmcallister.tumblr.com/. Anyway here's the tracklist, don't forget to turn the bass way up:

Shad Spits 6 Minutes of Pure Hip Hop

Just like to celebrate hater's gon hate's 100th post with a lesson in hip hop brought to you by Shad. Shad has been one of the most talented rappers in the game for a while now and is finally starting to get some recognition touring with K'naan across Canada. Broseph already posted up Shad's latest album which is easily one of the best of 2010 so check that out at http://hatersgonhate.blogspot.com/2010/05/new-shad.html. But definately don't sleep on his older albums which are different, but are in Broseph's and my opinion, even better.

The Zen Of Drinking Alone

"Understand that this is the guy who has stuck with you every step of the way, he stood with you in every fistfight, he was there when you were struggling through the blackest shadows of depression, he helped you plant the flag on the tallest peaks of success. All this time you were hoping everyone else was watching, and all along it was always you, gazing from within."
Fuck! Why does HSC have to be so close, I just want to get acquainted with my inner monkey now.

Sampology

Note: Videos Are There If You Click Read More (technical difficulties for some reason)

Big Day Out line-ups have been announced and on the list is Sampology. Sampology is a local aussie DJ who does audio-visual mixes by linking his decks to music and video clips which are projected onto the backdrop. He also produces audio-visual clips for instance check out what he did with Disney classic 'Cool Runnings'

What You May Have Missed In The Last Month

I've barely posted anything in ages so here's a little but of a catch up to what electro tracks have been floating around the blogosphere. Also check out the latest release from GRUM, king of the disco sound. Enjoy the awesome video clip.

Shutterbug (Jack Beats Remix)-Big Boi

California Special (Eumig & Chinon Remix)-DATA/DEBT
Digging the Eumig/Chinon sound, it's kind of like a funkier Justice (think New Jack)

Stranger (Polymorphic Remix)-Hey Today!

Been waiting for this one to drop since early August, was not disappointed. That first drop is a killer.

Through The Night (Bit Funk Remix)-GRUM
Will post the original when it drops on Oct 4th but for now this will have to do.

*EDIT: uploaded the actual Eumig & Chinon track, cheers

Swoon

Well that hiatus didn't last too long, I should have realised I wasn't going to be studying that much. Anyway this is the new (well not so new) Chemical Brothers song complete with a great video clip. The song is called 'Swoon' and contains one hell of a catchy synth line. This is definately leading the category of 'Summer Anthems 2010' but we'll see what happens after the new Muscles album drops later this year. So here is Swoon, some remixes and a classic track. Enjoy

Broseph is on Fire

unrelated but good for a few lols
Well Broseph is on fire with his countdown to the last day of school so i think I'll let the streak continue without interruption (apart from this one informing you of that). I'll be back in a week or so with a collabo list of some of my favourite moments during my years at The Fort (yeah we really have a lot of love for The Fort) and then i'll be back with some new mixes/music posts after HSC (finishing Nov 5). Plus if i can get around to it I'll learn how to use my brothers MPC. So consider this a break from posting for about 2 months from me, hopefully Broseph and Slyn will keep the blog alive in my absence.

Day 3 - Slynshady's Birthday & Waterbombs

Happy birthday Sleena! For those that don't know, she's the third writer of this blog, better known as Slynshady. She's brought us such wonders as songs for sleep deprivation, not to mention this little number. And she's 18 now, so let's all wish her a fantabulous day.
*crowd cheers*

I feel this picture accurately depicts her.

Woooh. Day started off with double PE which is probably my favourite thing ever. Too bad I slept in and missed half of it.

Walked in to see a bunch of a filled water balloons in a bucket, though, and I knew then that this day would be good. Both recess and lunch were promptly spent attacking our fellow Fortians with said water bombs and much hilarity ensued.

Firstly, under the guise of "oh shit Pat's not here yet what do we do?", Jacky succeeded in getting right up to Isaac while he didn't suspect a thing, but failed to actually, you know, hit him. AT POINTBLANK RANGE. But Harman the waterbender was there to clean up the job.

Then Pat finally got to school and we all told him we were going to get the Year 11 indie fagz. But really, we couldn't resist getting him instead and Cameron, Alex and WillNG finally got their revenge from a particular soaking in Ancient History a few days before.

Next few attacks I missed 'cause I was caught up in a conversation with Mr Malcolm, my basketball coach at school. We talked for nearly the whole of lunch about his university days - I pretty much know his life story now. But it was pretty awesome, he told me about all these basketball trips he used to make to a bunch of different places, and he talked more about how he got trashed after the games than the games themselves. I'm now looking forward to post-Speech Day drinks with the teachers more than ever.

Judging from the videos though, they seemed to get Jacky pretty damn good. Apparently Kef's was better but Josh screwed up the filming or something. Check out Alex's facebook for the good one's, though. Or you can scroll to the bottom for mine, if you enjoy maniacal laughter permeating your Cold War anxiety viewing experience.

Afterwards all the big boys and girls went down to the pub opposite the station to celebrate Sleena's birthday. Sadly this came just 3 days too early for me to join in but we still managed to have a sit down with them inside (not on a highchair, much to Brad's dismay). When the rest of the school reached the station we went back out to see Pat and Jacky dropping even more bombs from the station bridge, this time at the unsuspecting juniors below. Good times.

Audience participation today - wish Sleena a happy birthday! Share a cherished memory that features the one and only, Slynshady! Conquer the 7 seas!

Day 2 - Tuesday Sport & Disappointment

People can underestimate the weight that sporting achievement bears on a kid in highschool. Some people spend everyday playing their sport, every lunchtime perfecting their skills. I know for a fact that I've seen a ball fly through the hoop more times than I've looked at any textbook, that I can hear the sound of a swish (or click on the outdoor courts) louder than any teacher's voice, that I can recall the memories of past games better than any syllabus, and that sport vs school comparisons are fun to write.

Today I played my last game of basketball while representing Fort Street. A midget playing a giant's game, throughout the years I've banded with my fellow hobbits and together we ventured to destroy the One Ring to show that the little guys can play too. Five years of flawless grand final victories later, we stood on the very cracks of Mt Doom, leading towards what should have been an easy victory despite losing our best and biggest player to Balrog-related injuries.

I wasn't kidding about the midget thing. Look at that height difference! I'm barely up to his shoulders. I had to mark that for most of the game.

First 10 minutes went down a little like this:
Hey Hunters Hill, what's up? Oh wait, what's that? Your point guard is taller than our centre? No worries mate, we'll just casually double your score whilst playing the best team basketball I've seen us play in ages. We'll make the extra pass. We'll hit the open shot. We'll close out the half playing slightly worse, but its okay, we're still 10 points ahead of you.

Second half was a bit of a worry, though; they got to within 2 points of us in the last minutes. Then one of their players drew a foul and was shooting free throws when - time's up! We won! This guy's a scrub, he won't hit these two shots, right? Wrong. He hit them.

Then we lost in overtime.

Damnit. To win every game in the season, only to lose in the semi finals. That's heartbreaking. Year 12 basketball was something I was looking forward to since Year 7, too. All those accolades from the teachers and students at school and coaches I've had over the years just crumbled in front of me when I realised that we couldn't even carry Fort Street to the victory we've had every year since I've been here. Shit is mad lame.

But it ain't all bad. We've had some massive successes  in sport as a school, and as individuals. Mr Bradley Fisher playing for the North Sydney Bears, then later winning a different competition with the Dragons. Big man Ramilo going overseas to rep hometown Philippines in U20s rugby union, and bringing that cup home. Jacky finding his passion in soccer.

And as the year comes to a close and we temporarily trade in our brawn for brains, I can only hope that I'll always remember these moments of sporting success with y'all. Especially in basketball, because really, fuck every other sport.
Year 7 when EVERYONE played.
Year 8 when I was king.
Year 9 when Willie took my starting point guard spot.
Year 10 when Nelson kicked everyone's asses.
Year 11 when - fuck, when I didn't play for almost half a year. And Harman rose from the shadows to dominate all.
And finally, Year 12, when I realised that basketball really is more than just a hobby.

And to everyone else I haven't mentioned yet - Squiddy, Nahizzle, John, Joey, James, KP - you're all ballaz. Goodluck in the HSC gaiz, and keep up the ballin' attitude. Sorry Willie for not keeping fit for knockout earlier this year. Sorry everyone for an all-round disappointing season/performance this year. Love you all, 4real. (NO HOMO) (Damnit, we need to take a ballaz photo before the year ends)

More photos after the jump.

Day 1 - Report Day & Rock Park

I woke up this morning not even realising that we were getting our reports today. All I was thinking about was how great it was having a double free first thing in the day. Man that was good. Good, like only having 9 units to worry about now.

Then on the train it hit me. I didn't need the report to tell me that I dropped ranks in every subject. That I totally dropped the ball and was pretty far from my target of >90 ATAR. But then I remembered all those cliche thoughts about how an HSC syllabus isn't a measure of intelligence and how an ATAR doesn't define a person, listened to Disruption by Spit Syndicate and rocked up to my interview and was pleasantly surprised to find that my estimate is 84.5-89. And the best thing - its just an estimate.

Spit Syndicate - Disruption

BUT MORE TO THE POINT - Rock park!

Fort Street's very own shining beacon of hope and relief in times of English periods. I feel as if that guy's changed as much as we have during the years. Before it was was just a simple Rock in a Park, now there's all this fancy 'pavement' and 'gates'. And I'm pretty sure that once upon a time there wasn't any play equipment at all. Then there was some pretty cool things like monkey bars and spinpods. Now there's just a bunch of other lame things that I won't even talk about cause they're lame.

Nobody goes there much anymore, that has to change. Me, Alex, Daisy, Jana and Jess went down today and I can only beg for you guys to follow suit. Here's a cool photo!

 '08 til infinity

Okay, so I haven't done this before, but if you're digging this post give me some feedback, plaase! And while we're at it let's get some audience interaction in this bitch - tell me your fondest memory of Rock Park. Or if you're from another school, tell me about your school's most convenient jigging spot (kguy)

Don't leave me hanging and looking like a fool here, c'monnnn guysssssssssss.

New Sets From DJ X.McAllister + Count Scratchula

DJ X. McAllister and I DJed at an 18th last night (ugly sweater theme=awesome) and we ended up recording our sets. You can find all of DJ X.McAllister's mixes at http://xmcallister.tumblr.com/ and be sure to keep an eye out for his live sets (streaming links can be found at his tumblr). My set was a poppy-electro set while X.McAllister laid down a mix of pop, dubtep and DnB.
Anyway check out the mixes and tracklists after the jump (download by right clicking + save as):

I Am A Belieber

This is the absolute shit. Props again to Cihan (might as well give that guy a guest writing spot) for linking me.

Oh and something interesting I thought whilst listening - it reminded me a bit of Boy 1904 by Jonsi and Alex. Which uses a recording of the last known castrati. So pretty much, Justin Bieber = castrati prodigy.

You heard it here first guys.

Jonsi & Alex - Boy 1904

(LAZY POSTS LATELY CUZ I'M MEANT TO BE FINISHING MY MAJOR WORK)

Baths - Hall

cool shit is cool

Bag Raiders

Well i know it hasn't warmed up too much but i get the feeling that summer is on its way. I have just recently been listening to some of my past summer anthems which is getting me heaps psyched for summer. Been missing it since March.

Thats besides the point though. New Bag Raiders song has just been released and i'm happy to give you the 128kbps version. Heres one of their classics to go along with it as the new song seems to be a step in a different direction to the uptempo, heavily synth based electro tracks we're used to.

New Gil Scott-Heron??!

What the hell??

This guy was making music in the 70's...now he's got a new album, fully embracing all these changes in music, and kicking ass with it.

An actual substantial comment other than 'WTF' to come soon.

14 August 2010

A bit of everything

1) Eels are pretty swell guys.

2) This song would be the best commentary I've heard on the ..issue it talks about, if it didn't have that talking bit at the end.

K'naan - Fatima

First few listens I just thought it was a funky song with an annoyingly catchy chorus.
Then I paid attention.
I'll just say that listening to K'naan after a crap day or week always reminds me that there's a whole lot of other shit going down elsewhere that's much, much worse.

3) Josh is a hero.

4) Fuck the system.

Looks like there won't be a FLOP, sorry guys. But nonetheless I'm still pretty damn happy with the result because:
a) With our FLOP DVD there are no restrictions
b) We have some damn good ideas
c) I'm still going to push for the graduation song and lap around the hall
d) They took out the FLOP to reduce truanting and so they won't have to deal with abuse from students/parents. I feel it is our duty to let them know that these problems will in fact be much worse now without the FLOP incentive. Let's have some fun these last few weeks.
e) Fuckin', vuvus.

It's the last term of highschool, guys. Let's fucking show everybody that we are the best grade out, and remind the rest of the school what it means to be in Fort Street. Yes, that means screwing around, but also destroying the HSC. So share those notes around, read over each others essays and bask in the glorious- BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Dyno Mics

So me, Broseph and Slyn were at the Phatchance/Coptic Soldiers Facepaint Event last night and one of the standouts were definately the Dyno Mics.

Holy shit the energy they brought to the stage (jumping off stage and dancing with the crowd) and the live hip hop beats were amazing. Reminds me of an Aussie Heiruspecs.

Anyway here are the two songs i got on the CD i bought. I'm sure they won't mind me posting these tracks as they were giving away free copies but seriously get out to your local indie cd store and pick up anything these guys drop.

The Count's Tribute to Kno

The Cunninlynguists are easily my favourite hip hop group of all time and Kno is definately one of the most talented producers ever to grace human ears.

Dirty Acres is one of those unique albums, not my favourite Cunninlynguist album, but definately one of the most unique. This is due largely in part to the great beats Kno laid down for this album. As a tribute to his work, here is a small mix of some of the insturmentals of Dirty Acres. I originally mucked around with this mix when i first got my Xponent but i touched it up just recently as it did not nearly do the beats justice.

Anyway here is (download by clicking the arrow in the bar):

I can only hope to one day experience something similar (where you at Stories For Nothing?)

Should probably post the entire Sad Clown Bad Dub 13 seeing as this is the second clip I've posted from it, eh. In the meantime here's the album version of the song.

Words

"Love and Honor and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice" - Nam Le
And it occurred to me then how it took hours, sometimes days, for the surface of a river to freeze over—to hold in its skin a perfect and crystalline world—and how that world could be shattered by a small stone dropped like a single syllable.

29 July 2010

It goes; one for the student who refuses to submit...

So a letter from school came in this morning, thinly veiled as a 'final reminder' of the remaining events for the year. All I got from it were threats of expulsion should we "engage in unseemly conduct". Look at the picture above - that red square signifies where our FLOP should be. Sure, this shouldn't me news to me, but it irks me that the only communication we've had on this matter comes by way of indirect, one-way messages.

First time it was "We have cancelled the student review and - no questions at this moment, please" and we still haven't had that moment it seems.
She said we'd have 'student-run film festivals' but no mention of that here either.
Now she chooses to reassert her position through a subtle non-mention.

And check it, the best part comes later:

"The end of year celebrations for Year 12, 2004-2009 were most positive occasions and I am sure we can rely on Year 12, 2010 to continue this tradition."
Fuck that! What tradition are you talking about? 'Cause it sure as hell isn't the thirty-four year old one you've chosen to stop.

And for what reasons?
"Improperly close to the HSC", time that should be spent focusing on work/study? More time is going to be spent trying to get this bitch back on the road.
Tension built between the staff and students? Sexual tension, maybe.
I'd go on to debunk more of the reasons that've been put out, but I'm pretty sure these are all of them.

The FLOP was an integral part of the Year 12 leaving experience, one of the many reasons why I fucking love the Fort. It was a chance for the entire grade to get together and come up with something that best displays the traits the school says they want to instill in us: creativity with the videos, organisational skills to make sure everything gets done and teamwork to make sure it gets done smoothly. More than that, I believe that putting the FLOP together was when a yeargroup would really mesh together and find that harmony everybody searches for in highschool. Heck, it was even when the Year 12's got to get the farewell they damn well deserve.

Well that's my story for tonight. And no, this isn't just some weak armchair protesting shit, I'll hopefully be able to recycle some of this when Jacky and I have a chat with Moxy after trials - anybody else is welcome to join us. And if everything fails we still have Jacob/Will's idea where we all pull out vuvuzelas and drown out the final principal's address of our school career.

Blue Scholars - Commencement Day
And in other news, this is a sick graduation song.
